Organizing Your Book

Together the last two days with author to frame her book. She has years of great material but it needs to be organized. We started with theme of book, went to deciding on a working title, and now are in the process of determining sections and what ideas will go under each section. It’s easy to brainstorm with another because you stay on track. We did the sections and ideas in three hours yesterday and she said she was ready to write again. She had been unable to write because of travel and material overload. Today in three hours we’ll really get the ideas down tight under sections so we can divide into chapters.

This is a little different from memoir. It’s a book of spiritual ideas. But, some of the same applies. Once you are organized, the writing can be fun. I reminded her to use strong verb and to start a verb notebook so she has verbs to plug in, as needed. So much difference – she hurried to the story from She galloped all the way to the store. Or the present was nice compared to The present weighed a ton.

More later. Try organizing your ideas in a memoir by important turnabouts in thinking.
